New HCC, Harris Health apprenticeship pact educates patient care technicians

Nov 1, 2023

Houston Community College (HCC) and Harris Health System are joining forces to establish a comprehensive apprenticeship program to train and produce skilled patient care technicians.

A Memorandum of Understanding signing will take place on Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences Tower, 1919 Pressler St., to formalize the program. National Apprenticeship Week is Nov. 13-19.

The collaboration couples the resources of two leading institutions to address a growing demand for qualified healthcare technicians in the region. It will combine classroom instruction and firsthand clinical experience to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed in the healthcare industry.

Apprentices will receive training in areas such as patient care technique, vital sign monitoring, infection control protocols and medical terminology, gaining theoretical understanding and practical proficiency.

"At HCC, we’re committed to fostering partnerships that benefit our community and support workforce development," said Phillip Nicotera, M.D., president of HCC Coleman College. "Teaming up with Harris Health System allows us to create a pathway for individuals to start a promising healthcare career and make a positive impact on patients.”

Esmaeil Porsa, M.D., president and CEO of Harris Health System, said his team is excited about the initiative.

“The program will offer a meaningful income while an individual learns valuable skills that are in high demand not only at Harris Health but also with many other healthcare providers throughout the Houston region,” Porsa said. “It’s a real opportunity for individuals that may have struggled to maintain a living wage to pursue their career dreams and contribute to raising the standard of patient care.”
