Truck drivers to compete in truck rodeo at HCC

May 17, 2023

Truck drivers from companies across the Houston area are set to compete in a truck rodeo on May 20, 2023, at the Houston Community College (HCC) Roland Smith Commercial Truck Driver Training facility.

HCC is serving as the host location for the annual Houston Council of Safety Professionals Truck Driving Championship where professional drivers will compete in eight different CDL classifications.

Skills will be assessed in truck categories that include tankers, sleeper and non-sleeper trucks, and double and single tractor-trailers for drivers that deliver freight, chemicals, food and other products.

The competition begins with a written test followed by drivers navigating commercial trucks through obstacle courses judged on skills and safety. Winners move on to a national competition hosted by the American Trucking Association.

The HCC Northeast Campus has served as a location for competition for many years due to its expansive driver training facility and proximity to the transportation corridor.

“By serving as the host location for the truck rodeo, it not only exposes our students to the opportunities that exist in the industry, but also exposes the transportation community to the great facilities that we have and the excellent work of our faculty,” said HCC Northeast President Michael Edwards.

Previous competitions have included drivers from HEB, FedEx, UPS, CVS and other local freight and chemical transportation companies.

The Roland Smith Commercial Truck Driver program is meeting the demands of the trucking industry by offering corporate and continuing education for careers as over-the-road, bus, pickup and delivery, heavy equipment, and local truck drivers.
