HCC Southwest 5K run turns Valentine’s spirit into scholarships

Feb 5, 2026

Just days before Valentine’s Day, Houston City College (HCC) Southwest is inviting the community to put love into motion with its 5K Love Run, a fundraiser to help students overcome financial barriers to education.

The run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the HCC Missouri City campus, 1600 Texas Parkway. Participants will proceed on a looping course through surrounding neighborhood streets before returning to campus. The event is open to runners or walkers.

The brainchild of HCC Southwest President Michael Webster, Ph.D., the run is organized by the college in partnership with the City of Missouri City. Proceeds will support student scholarships and basic needs.

“Valentine’s Day reminds us that love is not just a feeling, but an action,” Webster said. “For many of our students, scholarships are the difference between starting college and finishing it. This event allows our community to show love in a tangible way by investing in students who are working to secure a better future.”

Registration is $10 for students and $25 for all other participants. Additional donations are encouraged at several giving levels through the HCC Foundation’s Love Run webpage at https://www.hccsfoundation.org/LoveRun.

HCC Vice President Colleen Reilly, Ph.D., said the event is part of the college’s efforts to connect community support with student success.

“Every step taken Saturday morning, whether running or walking, creates opportunity for our students,” Reilly said. “A simple 5K can help change a life by opening doors to education and possibility.”

The event is open to the general public.
