Textbook Savings Program Glossary

  1. Textbook Savings Program: This is a three-option program (Zero Cost Books, Low-Cost Books, First Day – Inclusive Access), with the mission to lower the cost of student course materials at Houston Community College so you can focus on your education and not the cost of course materials. Its focus is all about “Affordability & Equity.”

  2. ZCB – Zero Cost Books: Course materials are free. Also known as ZDG and OER

  3. ZDG – Zero Degree Course: Course materials are free. Also known as ZCB or OER

  4. OER – Open Educational Resources: Course materials are free. Also known as ZCB or ZDG

  5. LCB – Low-Cost Books: Course materials have a final cost that is $40 or less. Some LCB will be offered via the FD-IA Program for student convenience (so that the price is covered by financial aid and guarantee delivery on the first day of class).

  6. FD - First Day – A partnership between HCC, the HCC/B&N Bookstore, and publishers to deliver digital course materials to students, below-market rates, on or before the first day of class. It includes the cost of your digital learning materials as an additional course charge on your fee statement at the lowest possible rate found online from a like bookstore in accordance with the Department of Education mandate. Also known as FD-IA, I/A, IA, or SFD

  7. FD-IA – First Day-Inclusive Access A partnership between HCC, the HCC/B&N Bookstore, and publishers to deliver digital course materials to students, below-market rates, on or before the first day of class. It includes the cost of your digital learning materials as an additional course charge on your fee statement at the lowest possible rate found online from a like bookstore in accordance with the Department of Education mandate. Also known as FD, I/A, IA or SFD

  8. I/A or IA – Inclusive Access A partnership between HCC, the HCC/B&N Bookstore, and publishers to deliver digital course materials to students, below-market rates, on or before the first day of class. It includes the cost of your digital learning materials as an additional course charge on your fee statement at the lowest possible rate found online from a like bookstore in accordance with the Department of Education mandate.   9. SFD – Savings First Day A partnership between HCC, the HCC/B&N Bookstore, and publishers to deliver digital course materials to students, below-market rates, on or before the first day of class. It includes the cost of your digital learning materials as an additional course charge on your fee statement at the lowest possible rate found online from a like bookstore in accordance with the Department of Education mandate.   10. First Day (Inclusive Access) Course Material link – Link in Canvas where you can opt-out and opt back into your First Day-Inclusive Access Course Materials until the Opt-out deadline/HCC Census Date. This is also where (for most publishers), you can access your digital course materials if you are enrolled in a First Day-Inclusive Access Course.

  11. Opt-Out Deadline – Final day to not participate in the First Day Inclusive Access Program and to have a refund applied to your student account. Also known as the Census Date

  12. Opt-In Deadline – If you had opted out of the First Day Inclusive Access Program, this is the final day to select to participate again in the program. Also known as the Census Date

  13. Census Date -- Final day to not participate in the First Day Inclusive Access Program and to have a refund applied to your student account OR to opt back in if you had opted out and decide to indeed participate. Also known as the Opt-Out Deadline

  14. Courseware – Publisher eBook and homework/assessment/study tool digital platform (Ex. Connect, Inquisitive, Launchpad, Mastering, MindTap, MyLab, OWLv2, REVEL, WebAssign, etc.)

  15. Adaptive Learning Material – The delivery of custom learning experiences that address the unique needs of an individual through just-in-time feedback, pathways, and resources (rather than providing a one-size-fits-all learning experience), thereby providing differential learning for all levels of learners. This capability may be in your publisher’s courseware.

  16. eText Only – Course that requires/uses a digital textbook only, without publisher courseware.
