assume the role of Chancellor of the Houston Community College (HCC) System with a keen sense of purpose and gratitude to the HCC Board of Trustees for the confidence placed in me indicated by their appointment. I welcome the opportunity to work with our outstanding HCC faculty and staff to help effect positive change in the lives of students and the community.

Regrettably, I write to inform you that Dr. Kurt Ewen, our colleague, and friend, passed away Saturday morning after a lengthy battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Today is the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, please join me in pausing to reflect on how our nation was transformed on that day of unimaginable tragedy.
