Faculty Members Making a Difference

The best part of teaching at a community college is the opportunity to help students make positive changes in their lives. During the summer, I spoke with a young man who had dropped out of high school and earned a GED. A couple of years ago, he began taking classes at Houston Community College, but he was doing poorly until the last couple of semesters. He has now begun to do well in his classes and he has a goal: he wants to earn an associate's degree from HCC, transfer to the university to work on his bachelor's degree, and then go to law school. I congratulated the young man on his progress and asked him why he thought he was doing so much better. He quickly credited a government teacher that turned him on to learning. "I was never much interested in college, but there was something about the way that teacher taught that turned me on to college." I have no doubt that this student will go on to be successful because one of our faculty members made a difference.
